The PC uses an Intel 82865G graphics controller. The problem is that the controller shows avlbl modes as 1920x1200 (75 Hz) but monitor supports with the sole purpose 60 Hz. What to do? My friend uses the same monitor on matching graphics controller but on an IBM machine minus any problem.

As long as the resolution is set correctly, refresh rates don't situation with LCD monitors. I don't bother near setting refresh rates on LCDs because you can't see any difference. Most of them failure to pay to 60Hz anyway. It just doesn't business. Now a CRT would be another story. If it's really bothering you, you can right click on the Desktop, go to Properties and click the Advanced tab, very soon go to the Monitor tab and uncheck the box that say Hide Modes this Monitor Cannot Display. Click Apply. You can set the refresh rate independent of the resolution. But, as I hold been proverb refresh rate doesn't amount to a mount of beans on a LCD monitor.
Your Graphics controller can handle that resolution but not your monitor. Not adjectives monitors are the same. Nobody I know uses that high a resolution and 60Hz liven up rate causes flicker that can be easier said than done on your eyes. 1024 by 768 or 1280 by 1024 is the most you need!
set the resolution to the correct size (1920x1200) and you should be fine.
sometimes the drivers for a graphics card work on the D-SUB connector but not the DVI connector for some resolutions - you can try switching to a cable for the other connector if you're still have problems.
